Public Trustees can be appointed to manage the financial affairs of a person whose capacity to make financial or property decisions has been found to be impaired.

The relevant tribunal or court may appoint the state or territory public trustee as administrator or manager of the person’s finances and assets.

Like guardianship orders, these appointments can be challenged or reviewed.

Public Trustee of the Australian Capital Territory

The Public Trustee of the ACT offers financial management services for people with impaired decision making capacity.

The Public Trustees is to act in the interests of the individual, making decisions that allow the individual autonomy and opportunity to look after themselves as much as reasonably possible.

New South Wales Trustee and Guardian

The NSW Trustee and Guardian offers financial management services for people with impaired decision making capacity.

The Trustee will attempt to take the individuals specific circumstances and preferences into consideration whenever reasonably possible when making decisions about the persons best interests.

Office of the Public Trustee Northern Territory

Office of the Public Trustee, Northern Territory offers financial management services for people impaired decision making capacity.

Under normal circumstances an individual must give informed consent to their affairs being managed by the trustee.

If the individual, however, has a disability that may impair their ability to give informed consent, the Public Trustee may be appointed without consent at the discretion of a court.

Public Trustee Queensland

The Public Trustee, Queensland offers financial management services for people with impaired decision making capacity.

The Public Trustee’s role is to support individuals and ensure they are not exposed to financial exploitation.

Public Trustee South Australia

One of the Services offered by the Public Trustee South Australia is financial management for individuals who have impaired decision making capacity.  The trustee will attempt to take personal circumstances into consideration when making decisions in the interest of the individual.

Public Trustee Tasmania

One of the services offered by the Public Trustee Tasmania is financial administration for individuals with a disability that impaired decision making capacity.

The Public trustee will make an assessment of what financial decisions would be in the person’s best interests and manage their affairs accordingly.

State Trustees Victoria

State Trustees Victoria offers financial management services for people with a disability, illness or because of other circumstances are unable to effectively manage their own financial affairs in their best interest.

State Trustees may be appointed to administer a person’s financial affairs and legal interests by the Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal.

Public Trustees Western Australia

Public Trustee Western Australia offers financial management services for people with a disability which impairs their decision making capacity.

The Public Guardian may be assigned this responsibility based on the decision of the State Administrative Tribunal.
